Brief

We were approached by Boris Weber of Bewee agency on behalf of the Global Protection Cluster, whose mission is to monitor and raise alerts about the risks faced by vulnerable civilian populations in crisis situations, whether due to conflict or disaster.

These risks cover a wide range of threats, including:

  • Forced displacement caused by conflict or disasters

  • Gender-based violence (GBV) and exploitation

  • Child protection risks such as recruitment and trafficking

  • Attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure (schools, hospitals, vital networks)

  • Landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) endangering safety

The goal was ambitious: produce 15 animations of 3–4 minutes each — nearly an hour of content — to illustrate this diversity of risks. The voice-overs were provided by the production team.

The challenge was to deliver a large volume of animated content quickly, while staying true to the organization’s established graphic guidelines.

"Working with Motion for Good was easy - they quickly found the right rhythm, took ownership of the challenge, and brought forward creative solutions."

Solution

To meet these constraints, we proposed a pictogram-based visual approach — an ideal solution for several reasons:

  • Universal language: Pictograms and icons are understood across cultures and were designed in a neutral style to fit different contexts.

  • Efficiency: Their simplified form allowed us to design hundreds in minimal time.

  • Scalability: As vector graphics, they could be adapted to any size without loss of quality.

  • Reusability: The icon set became a valuable asset for future adaptations and productions.

We developed a modular visual language built around circular frames that contain and mask the pictograms, offering flexibility in composition depending on the number of elements to illustrate.

"We produced hundreds of pictograms to illustrate the different risks"

Motion for Good

Process

  1. Script reception & analysis — 15 scripts with pre-recorded voice-overs.

  2. Visual system creation — defining the pictogram style and modular circular layouts.

  3. Icon production — designing hundreds of pictograms to cover all scenarios.

  4. Animation — keeping movements minimal yet expressive, strictly following the chaptered structure of each video for consistency and clarity.

  5. Integration & final assembly — syncing visuals to voice-overs, ensuring smooth pacing.

Results

The final series provided the Global Protection Cluster with a coherent and versatile visual toolkit that could be used well beyond the initial campaign.

The structured, minimalist style ensured that each animation delivered its message clearly, while the reusable pictogram library became a long-term communication asset for the organization.
